Today I visited Durand Elementary School, where 204 kids greeted me with plenty of energy. I got many good questions, and this one is from Jacob Wilsey… What was the largest tornado in Illinois history?
The largest tornado in recorded history was the Tri-State Tornado, which crossed through parts of Missouri, Indiana and Illinois on March 18, 1925. It was likely an F5, though tornadoes were not ranked back then. This tornado holds the records for longest path length that is 219 miles, and longest duration, which was about 3.5 hours.
