Temperature Swing

A cold night is on tap for the Stateline.  A few lingering sprinkles will move out of the area by midnight.  The sky will begin to clear off for a bit overnight, allowing temperatures to fall to the freezing mark in many locations.  Isolated pockets of upper 20s are not out of the question, especially in rural and low-lying areas.  A Frost Advisory is in effect from 1am until 8am Sunday.

Frost Advisory: 3am-8am Monday Morning

This is the first frost advisory for the Fall season here in the Stateline.  Sunday morning low temperatures were a few degrees colder than expected, so Monday morning’s low temperatures will likely dip into the middle 30s in most locations.  A few spots will fall into the lower 30s for a time.

Areas of frost may develop after midnight.  Tender vegetation and sensitive plants may be affected by frost.

Freezing Temperatures: Past Due

Our climatological averages (high temperatures, low temperatures, daily rainfall, etc.) are calculated every 10 years.  Our current “average” uses weather data compiled from every day between the years of 1981 and 2010.

Average First 32° Temperature

Average First 32° Temperature

On average, most of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin has its first 32-degree temperature between October 1st and October 10th.  That has not been the case this year.  In fact, Rockford has not fallen below 40 degrees since May 13th—five months ago!  However, in 9 out of 10 years, we see at least one 32-degree reading by October 22nd.  The latest observed (between 1981 and 2010) is October 28th.

Frost Advisories and Freeze Warnings are in effect for the northern Great Plains for late Saturday night and Sunday morning.  Here in the Stateline, Sunday morning temperatures will generally be in the lower 40s with a few spots dipping into the upper 30s.

Frost Advisories to our West for Sunday Morning

Monday morning will be a bit colder, however.  With high pressure in control—clear sky and calm wind—temperatures will fall into the upper 30s for Rockford.  Other areas could dip into the middle 30s.  There is a small frost potential for Monday morning, mainly for the usual cool spots in rural low-lying areas and sheltered valleys.  Should any frost develop, it will be light and patchy in nature.

By the end of next week, temperatures may once again dip into the 30s.  Keep it tuned to the weather blog and our website for the latest forecast information. -Joe

Frost Advisory

Frost Advisory Map

Frost Advisory Map

As mentioned in this blog post yesterday, freezing temperatures are not out of the ordinary in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin this time of year.  Overnight and into early Monday morning, temperatures are expected to fall into the lower 30s.  Because of that, a Frost Advisory has been issued for the entire 13 WREX viewing area.

A Frost Advisory is in effect from 1:00am through 7:00am for Winnebago, Boone, DeKalb, Lee, McHenry & Ogle County.  Green, Rock & Walworth County in Wisconsin are also under a Frost Advisory for the same time period.  Chilly temperatures are expected area-wide so all counties in our area will have the threat for patchy frost.

(3:30pm Update) The counties of Carroll, Jo Daviess, Stephenson & Whiteside have now been added to the Frost Advisory from 2:00am through 7:00am Monday.

Even though we are not expecting a hard freeze, make sure you plan accordingly and cover any tender vegetation which may be susceptible to frost.
