Occasionally I peruse national media bulletin boards online. I have an odd interest in knowing what other people think about different subjects. However when it comes to climate change I am shocked at how many broadcast Meteorologists deny that it is even happening at all!

Here are some quotes that appeared there recently:

“It’s a cycle dating back thousands of years according to archaeologists. You can’t stop a cycle.”

I want to know how the cycle started and if we (humans) are pedaling the bike.

“Global warming is a Anti-Christian belief and not even science can support it….It’s obvious some people will not change their mind on if it’s real or not, so maybe those people will at least adopt the belief that “it’s real, but we can’t do anything about it”…I have no problem with them believing that if they want to, but I don’t want them wasting my tax dollars on something so foolish.”

I’ve never in all my days heard an argument that if you believe in climate change you can’t believe in God.

“Thank you Dr. Hedi!!!! So please revoke all the AMS seals of people who disagree with GW Further more…It’s quite interesting that most met. professors will tell you there is NOT enough evidence for either side to make a solid conclusion in either direction. BUT they do not speak out against it for fear of losing grants for research which are so hard to come by. If they don’t say anything the grant money keeps coming in and they can spread it around to other side projects that are more benefitial to meteorology and the public like increasing warning times for tornadoes. BTW have you actually taken any atmospheric physics and chemistry courses and received your meteorology degree so that YOU can actually understand the true science and equations which are presented. Or are you being spoon feed what the panel tells you and take it as gospel?”

Referring to Dr. Heidi Cullen, formerly of The Weather Channel. For the record, I don’t know what professors this person is referring to…there are no names to back up the statement.

“The IPCC is a peer reviewed body. But most of the peers have nothing to do with climate or any science at all. The final reports from the IPCC (they number 4 I think) were edited and composed by economic/political wonks with economic and politcal agendas. They took the independent works of scientists and carefully culled from that what was needed to create a crisis. Because of that twisted practice, many scientists either removed their names from those reports or themselves from further work under the quise of IPCC.”

The IPCC is edited by political wonks? Where’s the proof on that?

“There are as many or more peer reviewed papers than not that view climate change for the meandering cycle that it is, and not the hysterical anthropogenic pimp that the media and political *expletives* want you to buy.”

Where are they?

This is the precise reason we are going to tackle the issue of climate change on our blog. There is so much blabber out there that is not backed up by science. Anyone with any information from a non-political, scientific body that can prove to me that global warming isn’t occurring please send it to me by clicking on my E-Mail link. And, thank you in advance! -ES

All I’ve got to say to this is ……wow….anti-christian……..wow….

Well, I won’t be able to oblige you with proof that climate change isn’t happening, or that it isn’t human-induced –sorry 🙂

Interestingly, there used to be a group of corporations who ran a website with the name “Global Climate Coalition” –their purpose was to “market” doubt about global warming. Some of the industries involved finally realized that they were going to ruin their own future if they didn’t become at least part of the solution (ExxonMobil was one of them), so they disbanded. I imagine they spent more money marketing their phony science than any of them has put into real research on alternative energy or conservation. Here’s a link to a description of the group: http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Global_Climate_Coalition

And here’s an interesting article about some people dealing with the first effects of climate change: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/80beats/2009/04/27/global-warming-forces-an-alaska-town-of-340-souls-to-relocate/

Excellent post Eric. All local news stations around the world need to start educating people with real unbiased science. Nothing but pure raw data that speaks for itself.

@adam. Senator Inhofe’s blog page is hardly an unbiased source of information given his adamant stance as a “denier”. And i find it informative that the majority of the scientist signing on to this report are really out of their field, e.g. clay mineralogist, botanist.
Which is not to say they can’t grasp the research and have an opinion. But the climate system is fundamentally and ocean-atmosphere dynamic. Physics and Chemistry are the foundation.

The climate models do depend heavily on the the algorithms programmed from observational data. And any one model cannot hope to be predictive. But climate research based on computer modeling gives an overall outcome based on hundreds if not thousands of simulations. And these are being constantly improved by looking to real-world research that can help fine tune the parameters of the model.
Theories such as the Sun’s variation have been discussed and refuted in the peer-reviewed journals. The fact that it keeps coming up in the debates speaks more to the tactics of “deniers” than to scientific data. It is simple to keep repeating a lie until it becomes accepted. I’m sure this statement could be said to apply by either side of the divide on climate change, based on one’s political view.

I would err on the side of caution. Who cares if the economy is spared if there’s no where to spend your money?

@sorenson p.s. in reference in the blog to Dr. Cullen’s pedigree, she has a Ph.D in climatology and ocean-atmosphere dynamics from Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. One of the top Oceanography institutes in the world.

    Keep up the good work.

Even if someone doesn’t believe it is happening now. They have got to at least realize that our industrialization has caused at least SOME damage. There is plenty of scientific data to show that it has hurt the Ozone. So, if anything they could err on the side that they could be wrong and help their grandchildren and their children by doing simple things that won’t effect their daily lives.

@sean, have you ever found anything that is not going to biased? and about the models, we build models to simplify everything so that we can understand something. Just so you know, I don’t consider myself to lean one way or the other politically. I just feel like there are way too many people and organizations that profit from the fear mongering about global warming.

  8. Eric Sorensen April 30, 2009 8:43 PM

All I really want is some scientific material by an unbiased source to say that we are not causing global warming. That’s it and I can’t find it! -ES
