“Buy a car. If it rains, we’ll give you your money back…”

cargivaway“…and you can keep the car!”

Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Check out this story from Mike Hooker at KCNC in Denver, Colorado:

KCNC-TV – Greeley, Colorado – A car dealer in Greeley is trying to boost business with a promotion it hopes will help beat the recession. It’s a sales gimmick that has buyers keeping a close eye on the weather.

At Weld County Garage in Greeley, customers are looking forward to Memorial Day weekend — and they’re hoping for “perfect” weather.

“I hope it does rain … a lot,” auto customer Michael Newby said.

“If it rains an inch, that vehicle is free,” Steven Boldry with Weld County Garage said.

They’re taping promotional flyers to all the windshields — buy a vehicle between May 13 and 16 and then pray for rain. Click here for the full story.

The only thing is if it does rain that much, will there be catch to the free vehicles.

I wonder if that’s one of those hundreds of “closed” car dealerships that has to dump inventory?

That could be Weather Buff. It is hard to tell.

Usually these types of promotions are “insured” The car dealer pays an insurance company and if it does rain the insurance company pays the money. There is a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms forecast for Greeley CO at this time.

There was a jewelry store in Rockford that did a similar thing around Christmas time. BUB is right. Businesses buy an insurance policy that will cover them…much like non-profits buy it when they have a car giveaway during a golf tournament. -ES

On top of all that, these promotions typically have some research put into them as well. Greeley, CO is a semi-arid climate due to its low elevation and close proximity to the Rocky Mountains. Granted May is their wettest month of the year, but even then the average precipitation for May is a mere 2.55″ of liquid. So basically 40% of the month’s average rainfall would have to fall in a 12 hour period. The odds of that… pretty low.

In comparison, Rockford averages 36.61″ of rain per year while Greeley averages a paltry 14.23″ of liquid.
