So only .9 for Rockford. Am I misunderstanding this or is that not so bad?

Wasn’t there a nasty winter storm on or near Christmas Eve last year, too? Or am I misremembering?

Actually weather buff, I just went back and looked at the archives and we had two seperate snow events happen right before christmas and ended up with between 5-10 inches of snow. I had to work at walmart on xmas eve and it was bitter cold when I went out to start my car after the store closed for the night.

Thx tony — I thought I remembered that.

Working @ WalMart on Christmas eve … what a trip. I bet it was either really neat, or really NOT fun at all.

Some of my most memorable holidays have been spent in “non-traditional” places. I remember spending one (memorable) New Year’s Eve driving across the country alone. It was cold & the weather was blustry, blowing snow on the Tollway. I stopped at one of those restaurants on the PA Turnpike as it was getting close to midnight just to get a cup of coffee and have some other people around for a few moments.

The forlorn looking collection of people in the tollway rest stop on that bleak windy new years eve was definitely a motly collection of folks. There were probably as many different reasons for being there in that lonely rest stop in that awful weather as there were people. So at about quarter to midnight (their time) a small group of people in the lobby started singing “Auld Lang Sine.” More people joined in fairly quickly. Within about 15 minutes there were at least 100 total strangers standing around the lobby of the rest stop singing Christmas Carols, folk songs, and “Auld Lang Sine” at least 4 or 5 times. The restaurant workers joined in, and walked around serving everybody coffee and soda there in the lobby (no charge). By 12:30 the brief moment of common song was past, and everybody left to go along their way to wherever they were heading, all feeling just a tad better about the night, the new year, and humankind, than they had just an hour earlier.

    Very cool.

Very nice, Buff. Very nice… Thanks for the warm thoughts!

I actually don’t remember the snows happening, but I just know xmas eve at walmart when I went out to my car to start it while waiting for my best friend to get done, it was bitter cold. IIRC,the snow all melted 2 days later. I just hope after the rain on thursday we have enough snow left on the ground to still be considered a white christmas.

  11. pamella December 22, 2009 10:03 AM

WI Weather Buff – you should compile a short story collection! You have had the most amazing experiences – thx for sharing.

  12. Paula in Stockton December 22, 2009 10:07 AM

Well, here it is Tuesday morning, we had no snow at all falling until last night, this morning we have 4.2 inches. Sigh. The wind is blowing like a banshee out there, you can’t see very far, and the county truck plowed the end of the driveway shut. Merry bah humbug indeed! lol
Actually, I celebrate Yule. Very hard to celebrate the birth of the Sun when you can’t see it! And Cyndi, it was so cool to hear you say Happy Solstice yesterday!
Hope everyone has a very merry happy whatever you celebrate day!

Its still snowing in Madison, WI

  14. Paula in Stockton December 22, 2009 2:34 PM

Yeah, it started here again too. I ran to town and picked up eggs, milk and bread. With what is in the freezer and the cupboard, I can last a couple weeks now, if I need to, lol. I also stocked up on my candles, got them all out. With a possibility of half an inch of ice, I am pretty sure we will be out of power at some point. Candles provide light and heat!

  15. Eric Sorensen December 22, 2009 3:02 PM

    Good idea Paula!

  16. tony December 22, 2009 3:05 PM

Yep me and my best friend was in grays IGA on auburn street and that place was packed with people stocking up.

  18. FSU December 23, 2009 1:22 PM

Can someone please put Joshua on a timeout?

  19. FSU December 23, 2009 1:34 PM

Just started snowing in Roscoe at 12:32. Pretty big flakes falling quickly at 45 degrees with Easterly 10-15 mph winds gusting to about 20 mph.

  20. Aaron Brackett December 23, 2009 3:40 PM

Thanks for the update FSU. I live in the Rocscoe and Rockton area as well and we had some sleet early today, you can expect that snow to change back to some freezing rain later today.

Rick, Your trip to peoria could be a bit slick, but mostly for the beginning of your drive. As you go south, you will encounter mostly rain.

  21. FSU December 23, 2009 4:13 PM

It did moments after I typed that, but I was running out the door to take the kids sledding before it got too bad. We’re back and forth between rain, sleet and snow since then. The sleet sucked with the winds! Hurt everyone’s face and eyes! lol The hill was REALLY FAST! Icy and wet…

  22. deedee December 23, 2009 7:20 PM

Well our power finally came back at 11:20 this morning after going out at 8:54 last night. I pray this rain doesnt melt off too much snow for the white xmas tomorrow.

  25. FSU December 25, 2009 11:32 AM
