What color can a tornado be?

My weather blog question comes from Hanna, who’s a 3rd grader in Ms. Metras class.   She asked what colors can tornadoes be.
The color of a tornado depends on a few different factors. One factor is the direction of sunlight combined with how much moisture in air. If a tornado, forms with lots of humid air around it will likely form a thick cloud that may look dark, gray, or white depending upon whether it is lit from the front or from the back.  Another factor would be what kind of surface the tornado is passing over. A tornado crossing land that is made of red clay might take on a reddish hue or crossing farmland with dark soil may appear almost black.
