Awesome map of the day!

Check out this cool image from John Nelson, geography/map wizard who runs a cool geography website. The map shows the tracks of all tornadoes between 1950 and 2006.

If you step back from your monitor, you will notice a lack of tornadoes over Northern Illinois. Keep in mind, the map stops at 2006. The Poplar Grove tornado, the Caledonia tornado, and the long-track tornado from May 22, 2011 are not on the map. We know that we are “overdue” for a strong tornado here in Northern Illinois as the last F4 tornado to touch down was Plainfield, 1990.

Here’s a question for you: If you look closely, you’ll notice a relative minimum in tornado tracks for South-Central Missouri. Any guesses why that is? -ES

I think we are overdue people “optimists” think it won’t happen until its the last minute when it does so Rockford should prepare because that strong tornado could occur at any moment in the next 5-15 years or if a new sperm of La Nina comes back with left over energy from this year could bring something ominous in 2013-2014. Keep us alert Eric on changing weather patterns! Our only historical F3 and up that are not on the map before 1950 Eric occured over Rockford between 1861 and 1930. Wanna know where I got this info?? – Josh R

Historical Rockford Tornadoes F3 and up:
1861, 1863, 1888, 1914, 1917, 1928. WE ARE 84 to 160 years OVERDUE! Haha to see that empty spot in northern Illinois might have us concerned in the next 5 to 15 years!!

By looking at the pictures in todays terms from that 160 year time span, that damage in today’s terms could range between an F2 and F5. It’s crazy to think people think it really is not bad here when in reality when the “optimists” think it through it really is bad here sometimes in Rockford tornado wise.

Thats why you and me Eric have to watch our stopwatches and the skies to alert of changing patters.

I just think this map is so cool. The brighter colors show the stronger tornadoes! Nice finding Eric!
