Christmas Present vs. Christmas Past

Rockford’s final snowfall total for this Christmas will not be available until Thursday morning. However, December 25, 2013 will enter the weather history books in rare company.

Christmas Snowfall Frequency

Christmas Snowfall Frequency

Only one-third of all Christmas days have had between a trace and 0.9″ of snowfall, since records began in 1906.  As of 9:15pm Christmas night, 0.8″ of snow fell at Chicago Rockford International Airport.  Compare that to nearly two-thirds of all Christmas days, where no snow was recorded at the airport. Even more rare, believe it or not, is 1″ or more of snow falling on Christmas day.  This has only happened 6 times over the span of 106 years!

Christmas Snow!

snowAre you ready for some Christmas snow? A very fluffy snow will fall during the overnight as Santa delivers all of the gifts to the good boys and girls. And if any of the youngsters get a sled, snowboard, or skis, they’ll get some good use on the fresh powder!

If you’re traveling locally on Christmas, there will be some slick spots, mainly on the rural roads. The snow will taper to flurries during the early morning hours. 1-3 inches of snow will fall. Then, after a midday break, we’ll get another dusting to an inch of snow for the late-afternoon and evening.

Drive safely and have a wonderful Christmas! -Eric

White Christmas

REMEMBERWe are 12 hours removed from the beginning of Christmas, and there is a 100% chance that it will be a white one. With multiple inches already on the ground, that was a bit of a given, but now we are looking at the prospect of adding even more snow tonight into tomorrow. There is a decent chance that if you wake up early enough tomorrow you might catch a few flakes still falling. Model guidance is in agreement that 1-3″ are likely with the heaviest totals in Wisconsin. If we land 2 inches or more tomorrow in Rockford, that will be the first time since 1962 that it has happened on Christmas day! – Greg

How much heat is lost out of the top of your head?

I bet you’ve heard someone say “You lose 50% of your body heat from the top of your head.” I think my mom and grandma engrained that into me at a young age. During cold weather we always feared death if we went out in the cold without a hat. But that was good advice, even though it wasn’t exactly true.

The human head makes up about 7% of the surface area of the human body. So it would be next to impossible for 50% of the body’s heat to be lost in the head. Point being, any exposed skin is prone to temperature loss, especially in high wind and if the skin (or hair) is wet. If you have a thick head of hair, you’ve got some free insulation up there. But putting on a hat will offer that much more protection against the cold and when your head is warm, you will feel comfortable.

BALDThe most uncomfortable people during cold outbreaks like this are those who are bald and babies. If you’re bald, you obviously don’t have that layer of insulation. And consider a baby’s body. Their heads are disproportionately bigger than the rest of their bodies. If their heads aren’t bundled up, they will lose A LOT of heat. So make sure they are completely secured in a blanket if they have to be outside…even for a minute.

Lastly, our forecast low temperature tonight is some 109 degrees below your body temperature. Keep that body of yours warm by dressing in layers and limiting outside exposure! -Eric

Frigid Air Returns

We are officially on the back side of our first winter storm of the year. Our focus returns to a very frigid week ahaed. ftkTemperatures this afternoon have already dipped into the single digits, and tonight we will go from cold to bitterly cold. Our lows drop below zero into the negative single digits. Wind chill values will be a low as -20° when we are waking up tomorrow morning. This cold blast is going to last straight through the end of the week with the only forecasted high in the 30s not coming until Saturday. ft12zTHUThe silver lining (what white lining in this case) is that we will have a white Christmas and could even see some minor accumulation late tomorrow into early Christmas morning. – Greg
